iMovie is a free video-editing software that can be used on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer. Users may combine photos and/or video clips, add titles, music, and effects to make sophisticated videos. iMovie includes a collection of theme music and sound effects that can also be included in movie projects at no cost.
iMovie can be used to record student presentations or reports. Instead of having students use posters or PowerPoint or get up in front of the class and give an oral presentation, they can use images to create a short movie or movie trailer. Why have students write a report about the benefits of recycling when they can create a public service announcement using images and audio to share the benefits of recycling on the environment and the types of products that can be recycled. There are many different ways that iMovie may be used in the classroom.

Grade 5: United States History and Geography: Making a New Nation
5.4 Students understand the political, religious, social, and economic institutions that evolved in the colonial era.
Students are asked to separate into groups of 4-5 to create a 2-minute movie trailer in iMovie summarizing the historical events of the Salem Witch Trials in a logical and appealing manner. This movie trailer will be portrayed from the historical perspective of someone accused of being a witch. They may use an original recording that they take themselves, and/or use photos that they find on the internet to make their movie trailer. They will be encouraged to use music, transitions, and any other effects that they find in order to "polish" their video. Once approved by the teacher, the groups will present their movie trailer in the class and it will be discussed.
It is easy to add audio voiceovers and/or captions to your iMovie projects, allowing students to be able to express themselves with different music or transitions, as well as being able to add text or captions to a project.
